- Long ago in Ireland most of the houses were built of mud. Yellow clay was mixed with water and spread out. Then wheaten straw was shaken over the mud while wet and tramp-ed well into the mud . When dried and solid it was put standing. At this the wall was from two to three feet high and about the same in breadth.
The walls were built to the height of about nine feet. When this was finished it was left to try. While it was drying the men were cutting couples, collar ties and ribbs. These were made of white-thorn bushes and other young trees.
The couples were fastened to the the riggin. The collar ties kept the couple in their places. The ribs also kept couples in their places.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
