    Hedge Schools in Irishtown
    A hedge school was started in Irishtown by Bridie Leavy. She taught the children Irish and transcription. They wrote with mud on slates. There was a hill near by from which the children took turns to watch the soldiers.
    There is a sad story told about this school. One day a little boy called John Scally was left to watch the soldiers. He was young and did not understand why he was left there. The soldiers came quietly and asked the little boy what he was doing. He said he was at school at a hedge down in another field showing them the place. They went strait
