    "The May Bush"
The "May bush" or whitethorn is decorated when growing near a house with coloured ribbons, scraps of silk, and even coloured papers. The flowers (wild) then in bloom are strewn outside the doors of the houses, and supposed to bring luck to the inmates. They are strewn in honour of the Blessed Virgin.
