- White bread was very seldom used in days gone by. In this district wheaten bread, potato cake, and boxty bread usually called rasp and oaten bread were always used.
The pot oven, griddle, and frying pan were the vessels used for baking. An iron stand was sued to bake the oaten meal cakes in front of the fire.
Buttermilk and soda were used to wet the wheaten and white flour bread while the oaten bread was wet with water.
