   My mother told me that her father told her that a piece of land of 5 roods was sold for 4 sts of oaten meal. The man who sold the land lay dead before he opened the meal he was so far gone with starvation.

   Then the purchaser had both land and meal back again. Great numbers died but more would have died if it were not for the people who distributed the food and some were not able to use it when they got it.

   The Famine Period was called by the old people "Black Forty Seven". A great sickness known as the "Black Fever" followed the
