- A Funny Story At one time there lived in the townland of Ballymore a man named Bill Dolan.
The only way he had for living was by selling fowl. One day he came into Moate and bought a pair of boots. When he came home he greased them and put them beside the fire to soak which was an old custom.
Bill was greatly annoyed with foxes because they were taking all his fowl so he had to feed them in the kitchen for safety. While his boots were soaking he fed the fowl. As they were eating he looked out the window and there he saw a fox approach.
He lifted up a fork from behind the door and waited for the fox who soon jumped the half-door and pounced on a chicken. As he was about to go out with his prey he saw Bill and suddenly dropped the chicken ran at Bill's boots. Catching them he threw them into the fire.
Bill was so enraged that he forgot the fox and seeing the boots in the fire ran to take them out and in the mean time reynard got safely away.Patrick Brady
