- The Famine
The Famine was here about the year 1846. The potatoes rotted in the ground and the people had nothing to eat but turnipis and oaten meal. There were people called Higgins living in a house in Baylin opposite the Post Office and they used to sell oaten mean. The ruins are still to be seen. People used to work at four-pence a day and then they used to buy oaten meal. The meal that was sold was called "The Poor meal."
