The poor people trudged slowly until they came to Beechwood. Here they sat and rested while waiting. When they got their shares they lit fires and prepared to make porridge in a little can or skillet each had brought.
You could see fires along both sides of the road for a long distance. When the meal was cooked they ate it many of them ravenously and many of them never rose again. They died after eating. The food killed them. They were able to trudge miles but when they had eaten they just died off.
