- In olden times people used a churn with a dash which was pulled up and down by the hand and every person that would come into the house while churning would have to take a turn at the dash. If any person would not take a turn at the dash they would think it was unlucky. They were also suspicious of certain class of people of having a charm and taking the butter away and so as to have a double supply themselves.
