The potatoes have to be sprayed in Summer months also.
The spraying is done in the following manner.
The farmer gets a barrel of water and adds about 8 lbs. of blue-stone and ten lbs. of washing soda to the barrel of water.
Then he dissolves the blue-stone and washing soda and when they are dissolved he tests the mixture lest it should be too strong.
He puts a piece of blue litmus paper into the mixture and if it turns red and the mixture is too strong and if it remains blue it is right strength.
It is necessary to do this because if the mixture was too strong it would burn the potato-stalks and in consequence the farmer's crop would be ruined.
The farmer sprays his crop at least twice and sometimes three times during the Summer.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
