  1. About the year 1927 or 1928 there was a drowning fatality on the River Shannon in Co Longford. Five local people were rowing for pleasure when their boat suddenly got into the current rushing for the sluice gates and was carried at full speed and smashed in pieces against the wall. All the people were drowned except one girl who was saved by a man who happened to be fishing on the other side of the river. An old man from who they borrowed the boat told them not to go out too far because of dangerous currents but they disregarded his warning. Tarmonbarry is the name of the place where this disaster occurred.
    The greatest fire that occurred in Co Longford was the burning of the Co Home in the year 1905. It is not known how the fire started. One portion of the Home was completly burned to the ground. There were hundreds
