- The food eaten in olden times was much different from the food eaten now. The people used to get up at four o'clock in the morning and work until seven o'clock. Then they eat their breakfast. They used to have oaten poridge and new milk for the breakfast. They would work then until twelve o'clock. They eat their dinner then. They used to have potatoes and buttermilk and fish for the dinner. They eat their supper at eight o'clock. They used to have potatoes for the supper. The used to sing nearly all night. They used to sleep only three or four hours. Oaten bread and milk was had in the afternoon. Whatever fish was left after the dinner was eaten with the supper. The bread was made from ground oats and buttermilk. Then it was put on a griddle and baked over the fire. Eggs were eaten at Easter, Griddle cakes (Pankakes) on Shrove Tuesday, Colcannon on November 1st and bacon at Christmas. Tea was seldom used about 70 years ago except by old women.
