   In vain their wives and mothers and aged fathers pray;
   In vain they cling around the men imploring them to stay;
   For they minded not their praying and they heeded not their cries,
   and they heeded not the storm that was gathering in the skies;
   But out they rowed their little boats far from that fatal strand,
   Then swift and sure came punishment from Gods avenging hand;
   For soon it grew so dreadful dark their boats they scarce could see,
   and then the storm surrounded them with dread intensity.

   Darker grew the dismal night and bright the lightning flashed.
   Louder rose the deafening winds and loud the thunder crashed
   In vain the ill-starred fisher men pulled hard to reach the strand
   For mountain waves and cyclone winds
