- The old method of making bread was to first get some grain and grind it between two smooth stone slabs called grinding stones. Each stone was about three inches thick and about four stone weight. The people that if the stones were not that particular size they would not grind the grain. (for sketch of grinding stones, see fig. 1). Then it was mixed into a dough and it was put into a kind of oven called a "hooper". (for sketch of hooper see fig. 2). This "hooper" was made of fire clay and cement. In this the bread was baked and these loaves were called "wheat-meal cottage loaves".
