- 255In the famine of this district the majority of the people died of hunger and starvation. Their crops refused to grow and the worst plight of all was their potatoes were blighted and blackned and could not be used as food. As they practically had nothing to eat they died in large numbers by the roadside. It been impossible to make graves for them all so they were buried in large holes. A great number of them beign thrown in together. A large quantity of Indian meal was sent over from America to try to keep the people alive and it was divided in certain houses to make porridge for them. In this village it was kept at Kavanagh's.
