    Before the fall of Enniscorthy, news spread that the Oorangemen were planning a general massacre of Catholics. But lionhearted John Kelly organised his district. They marched to Enniscorthy and their first fight was at the Three Rocks the Meath Militia were defeated. Shortly after this the town of Wexford surrendered, and on the night of June 4th the Insurgents under Bagenal Harvey encamped outside New Ross. A young man named Matthew Furlong of Raheen was shot dead while taking a message. When the Insurgents heard this they became furious and an immediate attack was made, on June 5th, on the Three - Bullet Gate.
