  1. The girls and boys of long ago made their own toys.
    Dolls were made of wood and rags. Most girls took an interest in dressing dolls. They made dresses, skirts, jumpers, scarfs, and many other kinds of dresses. Sometimes cradles were made, and this was done with a boot box.
    Crosses were also made, and they were called St Patrick's Crosses.
    A cross was made from the cardboard and around it were little ornaments worked with coloured papers. There were worn on the shoulders of the children.
    The boys made slingers, and cribs for catching birds, tops, catapults and various other toys.
    Slingers were made from a piece of cord and a piece of leather.
    A stone was placed in the leather, and then swung around in the air and in this way the stone shot through the air.
    Catapults were made from pieces of rubber and a forked stick.
