We snare eels by means of a long hazel rod. We put three or four staples along it and then we pass the line through the staples and on one end of this we put a running noose. This noose is dropped near a hole in the bank. A worm on a hook tied to another piece of line is then dropped in front of the noose. The eel sees the worm but in order to get to it he has to pass through the noose which is opened wide. As he does so the line is pulled tight and he is snared in the loop.- Bailitheoir
