- FoodIn olden times the food eaten by the people was very different from what they eat at the present time. The principal item of food was got from the oat crop. The oats was ground into meal and oaten bread and stirabout were the principal items of the meals. In the mornings the men had a mug of new milk with stirabout and then a slice or two of oaten bread with milk. The bread was baked on a griddle and the cake was thus very thin and had hard crusts. At the present time this same oat cake is often specially made for greyhounds It is said that this oat cake was mainly responsible for the big bones and perfect teeth of our ancestors. The men at this time often had to walk 15 to 20 miles to work and be at their work at 7 o clock even(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
