- During the period from 1625 to 1824 penal laws were in force in Ireland but during the 19th century they were repealed and the catholics could attend mass and other worship. The penal laws were the same all over Ireland and one priest would only be left in a parish, so some of the priests left the country and more of them hid in bushes where they used to say mass. There is a mass bush in Johnduffswood and the place where the mass was celebrated has been always green through Winter and Summer since. There is also a mass bush on Wynne's hill which is situated in Kellymount. There is a story told how the soldiers came when the priest was saying mass and they fired bullets but they used to fall off his vestments until he had mass said. When mass was over the bullets pierced him and he fell dead.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
