- Local Forge
There is a blacksmith in Aughrim. His name is Michael Caulfield and his forge is at the edge of the river The forge door is shaped like a horse shoe. The ancestors of Michael Caulfield were blacksmiths also The forge is big and there is a bellows and an anvil and a trough of cold water and a sledge in the forge There is a stone outside the forge and he lays the stroke of a wheel on the stone and puts the box of the wheel in the hole in the stone and then he shoes it. Some years ago the men used to gather into the forge to tell stories. Forge water is good for the blood of animals. The fire is on a heap of stone built like a ditch and the bellows is beside it hanging from a pole in the roof.
