- When the Danes were in Ireland they robbed churches and monasteries and they hid the gold in lake and mountain through out the country and in this parish also. The left horses and dogs to guard it and some of them took the shape of fairies and stayed to watch it themselves.
There is a lake in the townland of Derrylahan and it is said that the Danes hid a pot of gold in it and that it is guarded by horses and fairies. One time a few men set out to drain the lake in order to get the gol. They worked away for about a week until they came to the middle of the lake, but they could not drain it any furthure further. There was a well in the middle of it and the gold was in the well. They gave up the search for that time.
In some time after a man dreamed that he saw the gold and that something told him that a life would have to be lost before the gold could be got. The next day a crowd of men went(continues on next page)- Collector
