many girls were in a family, the eldest would have to be married first, a father or mother would never 'brauk' them, that is let a younger one get married before an older one.
The elder one would be dressed out best of her whole family, and when she got married the next one to her was dressed well then, and so on, till all were gone.
The girls got married from eighteen to twenty six years of age. No one would take a girl of thirty years of age at all, no matter how hard up he was for money, or no matter how much money she had.
The very poorest had very large families often ten to fourteen children, and were very proud of the fact.
There was a man named McGoldrick not far from Tiercahan School and he had only four children and away from home he always said he had eight, when he was asked.
The poor man, who had no family, was persecuted with the girls of his neighbours. It was the first ''up cast'' to him too, if he happened to fall out with a neighbour
