- Some of the old marriage customs are still preserved locally though the greater part of them have died out and are partly forgotten. There used be a great rush to get married before Lent would commence and that accounted for the large number of marriages which used to take place on Shrove Tuesday. The person who used to arrange the marriage was called a "matchmaker". This was a kind of profession in the country in olden times Any young man who decided on getting married would call on the "matchmaker" and have a chat with him telling him the name of the girl he was thinking about asking in(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
