  1. Long ago in the penal days the priests used not to have the same privilege as the priests have at the present day. They were hunted form place to place and had to say Mass in secret places and they had to keep a man on watch while they were offering the Holy Sacrifice. I know of three places where Mass was offered in those times. One was offered at the back of a large hedge on a lonely road about three miles from Mullingar in a place called Violets town. There is now a memorial errected to mark the spot. Another place is in the centre of a large bog about two miles from Killucan in a place called Knockmant. There is a lone bush growing in this spot which up to this day is called the bishop's bush. The
