- In years gone by there were no schools in this county. The Teachers who were men and women above the ordinary intelligence held classes in country houses and were paid by the pupils whom taught.
There were no colleges where boys and girls could be trained for teachers. About 100 years ago the first schools were built one of which is still to be seen in Ballinagh but is now derelict. Its first teacher being a man named John Pepper.
