in an earlier time, as anybody who was bitten by a mad one became insane and another person on receiving even a scratch from the afflicted one also became a victim.
For lack of better management, accomodation and knowledge the unfortunate victim had to be destroyed. An aged lady resident in Lislea was bitten and became subsequently insane. Luckily nobody else contracted the disease but the poor creature had to be destroyed. In those days the awful deed had to be done by smothering the victim between two "ticks" or feather matteresses.

Near my home in the historic Quilca lake, a youth named Butler, whilst holidaying in Mullagh was swimming in its waters and getting beyond his depth the poor fellow was drowned. The tragic happening so grieved the people that a song was composed about him, and we hear the old people still relating the circumstances of his death.
