about twenty perches from the shore of the lake. It is situated on an Island called "Woodwards Island". It is said that there was a graveyard beside the monastery. No one was allowed to enter it except the monks. Generally, the people brought their corpses to the shore, and the monks sailed it to the monastery, and it was interred the following day.
The Danes were in Ireland at this time, and found out all about it. They knew that the wealth of the country was preserved there also. They put a live man in a coffin and pretended he was a corpse, and he succeeded in robbing the monastery in the middle of the night. The pretended corpse succeeded in destroying valuables which were in it.
There are also the ruins of an important old school on Bruise hill. It was the learning house of this and many other townlands. Night-school was carried on in it also.
