- Most of the houses long ago were thatched with straw and sometimes rushes. These houses consisted of two rooms and one kitchen. The straw and rushes grew on the ground. There was a bed in most of the kitchens called a settlebed. It was placed at the back wall. The fireplace was always at the gable. The chimneys were made of stones and mortar and in some cases clay and wattles.
