- Long ago the people in the locality had certain occupations such as candle and candlestick making, noggin making, woodwork and creel or basket making. The candles were made of rush wicks, peeled and dipped in tallow until it was a certain thickness. The candlesticks were of iron made in the forge with a hole about the size of a thimble to hold a candle. There was no mugs long ago but the people used little wooden vessels called noggins with two hoops to keep them together. They were also made in this district. Tubs and barrels were (are) some of the other wooden articles.Creel and basket making were carried on in Gortin. There was a story told about a man named Tom Dermott who was asked by a judge in Cootehill(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
