Amongst the well-known landlords were Dunalley, Garvey, Gayson, Stafford, Finch and Bagley[?]. All of them were English settlers who came with Ireton, Cromwell's son-in-law. They were mostly a bad tribe who went in for making the native Catholic Irish their slaves and tenants. The Catholics had to pay tithes for the upkeep of the Protestant Church and ministers.
Evictions and plantings were the order of the day at one time. The evicted people had to go to Connaught or foreign lands such as America, Australia, and some to the workhouse. The landlords at one time had every power over the people, as they were the law themselves being magistrates, judges and justices. Even their descendants prevented public utterance(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
