The tenants were not allowed to improve their houues or holdings. A story is told that Miss Prittie daughter of Dunalley ordered the father to clear away or demolish a farmer's house because the farmer painted and white-washed his house. The poor farmer had to smear tar over his house in order to be left alone. The daughter told Dunalley that the white house destroyed the landscape view from the great house at Kilboy.
Such was the state of things at one time and the result often was the reason why the people of Tipperary often resorted to the gun and shot landlords and land agents. As late as 1920 an agent named George Friend was shot in Cloughjordan parish.
