The ruins of St. Mary's Abbey Shannahan can be seen in the distance from the site of "The Fairy Tree." They lie about a mile to the west of Clogheen. This Abbey had a glorious and historic past: Local tradition maintains that the hunted and outlawed Earl of Desmond used to hear mass on Sundays in the Abbey during his stay in hiding in the district.
