- Shrove is the greatest time for getting married. There used to be a great many runaway marriages on Shrove Tuesday long ago. The people in this locality say that Thursday is an unlucky day for getting married. They also say that August is an unlucky month for getting married. The strawboys visit the houses on the night of the marriages. They dance and some of them sing songs. When they get food they go away.
- In connection with marriages in harvest time they often quote the proverb: "The sheaf that you bind in harvest you'll loosen it in spring".
The strawboys get a drink of porter when it is available.- Faisnéiseoir
