- Most of the houses long ago were what was known as mud wall cabins. Stone and mortar was rarely used in olden times. Good mortar made from lime and sand seemed not to be in vogue then.
These houses well all thatched and the timber for the roof was got in the local bogs. They were covered with scráith under the thatch and it made them warm and comfortable.
There used to be a bed in every kitchen and it was called a settle bed. It was constructed in such a way that at night it could be opened out and made into a bed and in the morning It could be folded again and would serve as a table or bench to sit on. The fire-place was always at the gable wall and I never heard of it(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
