- Between the years 1867 and 1870 there were three hedge schools in the vicinity of Arva. In the townland of Farrangarriff a half mile from Arva there was a hedge school. A man named Michael Rourke taught in it. Another hedge school was situated in Pound Street Arva in which a man named Michael Smyth taught Another was situated in the townland of Tycusker about a half mile from Arva. In this school a man named Shannon taught. He taught the serving of mass. As the teachers had no houses of their own they lodged in the houses of children attending the school. One boy brought the teacher home one week and another the next week. The boys attending the hedge school paid the teacher. The fee in the schools around Arva was 1/6 per quarter for each boy. The subjects taught were English writing, reading, arithmetic and spelling. At an examination the best speller got a prize of a pin. Irish was not taught but it is probable that both teachers and pupils knew Irish as most of the people living at the time knew Irish. The books used were the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
