- About thirty years ago there lived in the townland of Farrangarriff about a mile from Arva a man named James Brady. locally known as the Fiddler. He made a bet of five shillings that he would carry a bag containing two hundred of potatoes and two men on it. He carried the potatoes and men for eighty perches. He walked the first part of the journey downhill and ran the last part of it uphill.
Another local hero was Bernard Reilly who also lived in Farrangarriff. In the years when Catholics were being persecuted by the Protestants he used to go into Arva and put all the Protestants out of it. Sometimes he used to chase them with a stick and at other times he used to put them out with his fists. He was often sentenced to a term of imprisonment.
