- Long ago, in the cold nights of winter old people gathered around the fire and told funny, yet true stories of ghosts and fairies to pass the long nights.
There was at that time living in the townland of mullan a very nervous old man that would be afraid of his own shadow at night.
His name was Hughie Dillon. He would go to a neighbouring house before nightfall, and make his ceilidhe.
There was one night that there were jolly people in the house, and they tied a sugar bag to the tail of his coat with a few grains of sugar in it. Each night Hughie would be left at his own door by the man of the house, but that night he only left him a small piece of the way, and he held the bag until he was leaving him so that it would not rattle.
Then Hughie began to run and the bag began to rattle.
