   spread in the neighbouring parishes with lightning rapidity that food was to be had in Kiltanneanlea and the starving people came in bands beseeching him to give them some of the turnips to appease their dreadful hunger. The story goes that the visitors were terrible to look at, starving eyes and emaciated bodies, my greatgrandfather being of a kind nature could not refuse their requests, he gave them the turnips while they lasted and then before many days all the turnips were gone, bands from still farther districts hearing of this great news looking to him for help and when they discovered that they were too late they ravenously devoured leaves of the turnips decaying or decayed in the furrows.
   Adjacent to my native village close to the old castle of Neadanuire there is a large rocky mound and the old people say that this was a burial ground during the famine years. Judging by the size of the mound it looks as if hundreds of people were buried
