- Long ago there used to be a fair held in the village of Bodyke and at one fair a man named John Moloney was killed by a blow of a policeman's baton and since there was never a fair.
There is a townland bordering Tulla parish called Aonach uí Néill and a neighboring townland called Annagh or Aonach.
We have some families who are buyers or jobbers as they are called who go about to the farmers before a fair and try to buy as cheaply as they can and sell at the fair of Scariff nearest fair place to Bodyke.
When people sell and are paid for their cattle they give a "Luck penny." No matter what they sell they give a Luck penny varying from 6c to 10f. The fairs in March, April, May and November are considered best.
People often criticize a man for giving a small Luck penny. They like to get it however small, and say it brings luck.
Bargain are made - then one man puts out his hand and the other strikes it and the bargain is made. It is supposed to be a very mean thing to break such a bargain.
Each buyer has his own mares for cattle etc.
Sometimes the halter is given with a horse that is sold and sometimes the man buys a bit of rope and gives that instead.
