2. The Travelling Folk

   The travelling folk visit this district throughout the year. The most of them have been doing so for the past years. Some of them are very poor and dwell in caravans drawn by horses. They usually come in the Summer when the days are fine but in the Winter the majority of them reside in towns and cities. When they come to the district they go around the place begging for alms. The people give them tea, sugar, bread, flour, potatoes, clothes, and shoes. They usually make buckets and saucepans, out of tin and sell them to the people. The men-folk go around and sweep the chimneys of the houses and the people pay them. They stay for a week or more when they come. On certain days such as fair-days, feast-days and market-days you usually see them around. Some of them are married and have families while others are single. In former times there used to be a woman going around the country by the name of "Nell the Beggar" and also "Big Bridge" and a man by the name of Brien. Long ago
