The Making of Bird Snares. June 17-1938.
The old people used to make bird snares before guns were made. They were made as follows:-
A pliable piece of sally about a foot long was got to make a bow.Waxed hemp or strong cord was tied across it firmly ,so the bird would have to go through the loop. The loop was made of two doubles of strong horse-hair ,twisted together and made into a running loop .Then it was suspended from a cord tied across the bow.this was brought to the haunts of the birds such as drains or swampy places .It was stuck firmly in the ground and the loop suspended downwards .If the bird stuck his head ,neck, leg the loop would run and hold the bird .Snipe and wild duck were caught in this way.- Bailitheoir
