- All houses formerly thatched. There were men who carried it on as a trade.
When roofing a house out of the [?], the rafters &c were made out of round timber, often roughly squared.
The main rafters running from eave to ridge were called couples. Sometimes they were joined at top with a wooden pin & sometimes mortised. About 1/3 distance down they were held together by crossbeams called collar-braces, which were secured by wooden pins. A pair of couples would be placed about every six feet.
