    attacked by the Danes in the ninth century. The Norsemen made frequent incursions inro Fernes, and in 930 they plundered the Abbey and burnt the town.
    In 1167 it is said to have been partially burned during the war provoked by Dermot, son of Mac Murrough, King of Leinster, who died here in 1171. Some ruins of the ancient Augustinian Monastery still remain and there is also the Well of St. Aiden at the foot of the hill on the Gorey Road, and an ancient Celtic Cross.
