    Castle of Ferns begun in 1177 by Maurice Fitzgerald, first cousin of Strongbow. After passing through various vicissitudes, the castle was dismantled in 1649 by Sir Charles Coote. Its ruins are picturesque. One of the four original towers is in good preservation, and contains a small chapel with a groined roof. From 1335 to 1535 the castle belonged to the Crown, and Constables were appointed.
    On Sept. 28th, 1649, the castle was surrendered to Oliver Cromwell.

    Enniscorthy in the centre of this town is a very perfect specimen of an old Norman Castle. The Castle
