    was built by Gerald Prendergast between the years 1231 and 1240. It was given as a residence to the poet Spencer in the reign of Elizabeth.
    On his march to Wexford, Cromwell entered the town on the 30th Sept. 1649, and in his dispatches to Parliament says "I found here a strong castle, very well manned and provided for by the enemy, and close under it a fair house and a monastery of Franciscan Friars, the considerablest in all Ireland.
    We summoned the castle to surrender and they refused to yield at first, but upon better consideration they were willing to deliver the place, which
