    James Joseph McDonnell of Carnacon house was nicknamed "Seámus Ruad." He was a colonel in the United Irishmen He marched to Ballina to meet Humbert. He led the local peasantry to Castlebar and fought the Red Coats at "Staball" in Castlebar. He also engaged the Red Coats at French Hill the second street of Castlebar. He accompanied Humbert to Coloney, Hill in Co Sligo and went from there to Ballynamuck in Longford The Red Coats uncovered his hiding place and an officer attempted to arrest him. McDonnell offered the officer twenty gold coins and the officer knowing he would get no reward for McDonnells A capture took the money and released him.
