He accompanied Humbert to Coloney, Hill in Co Sligo and went from there to Ballynamuck in Longford The Red Coats uncovered his hiding place and an officer attempted to arrest him. McDonnell offered the officer twenty gold coins and the officer knowing he would get no reward for McDonnells A capture took the money and released him.
