  1. Houses long ago were built with stone and lime and sand and were thatched with straw rushes and heather. A man got up the ladder and thatched the house. He tied it with straw ropes to prevent the storm from knocking down the house. In olden times the doors were very small and there were very small windows also. Floors were made clay and some were made of flag. The kitchen bed used to be in the corner of the kitchen near the fire. The man of the house used to sleep in it. The half door was put on the keep the children in and the hens out. The people had no lights
