  1. I
'Midst snow & cold we had searched for gold
My one true pal & I.
But that frozen hell kept its secret well
so we bade the north good-bye.
With rations low & far to go
We faced for the south & rest
& we stumbled ahead with hearts of lead
& with thoughts that weren't the best.
    II
When you feel in a state of black despair
& that life has nought to give
& future days seem black as hell
& you've no great wish to live
Don't force the pace along the trail
    In your broken battered state
But rest awhile on your onward way
& you bet the trail can wait.
    III
When two days out on our homeward trek
    In a lonely mountain rut.
Our jaded minds & aching soles
Found rest in a trapper's hut.
His stores were good & I liked his food
    & better far his rum.
I drank long & fast till I fell at last
    A raving drunken bum
    III
I slept for long for the rum was strong
& awoke with a throbbing head
