The chimney was made of clay which was called "dóbh buidhe" and wattles. In some places the fire was made in a corner of the house and a hole in the roof to let out the smoke. There were no windows until 1830. Before the windows came in common holes that were in use and a bag of hay or straw put in them in the night time.
